Santee responds critically to County’s Las Colinas report

Draft EIR presents a “closed minded view” and is significantly flawed

10/08/2008
Do not get lulled into that long slumber just yet Santee. This is far from over. The county has put this off a little longer in what I believe is an attempt to wait for us to let it fall under the radar. We can not let that happen! Please stay tuned!

June 12, 2008 (Santee, California) – The
City of Santee has filed a critical response to the County of San Diego’s draft  Environmental Impact Report (EIR) analyzing the impacts of a proposed women’s jail to be built at the current site of Las Colinas Detention Facility (LCDF). The 27-page response details serious flaws with the County’s report.

The County is proposing that Las Colinas be expanded to 45 acres, tripling the size of the 15-acre facility that sits in the heart of Santee’s downtown commerce center.

“This EIR was not well researched and falls far short in its analysis of current site and alternative sites,” said Keith Till, city manager of the City of Santee. “The report unjustifiably names the current Las Colinas site as the best location for the jail while failing to acknowledge the benefits of other locations.”

The EIR, which is required by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), was conducted by an outside consulting firm hired by the County.  CEQA law requires that alternative sites be thoroughly reviewed in the EIR.  It was made public April 24, 2008.
